a Compliment

Don't tell him, but my son made my day today. It was in school playground- the place where all the real learning takes place! - and they were talking about parents. You know, how embarrasing some of you are.... Well it turns out that after several cringe tinged stories from the boys, one of my son's friends announces that I am a legend. Well, it took a lot of willpower not to break into a big silly smile or do a little jig. I was totally made up that a fourteen year old thought I not only passed the cool parent test but surpassed it! whoo hoo.

In todays world of social networking, where everyone is busy on Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter to name just a few of these many sites, you wonder about that list of 500 - 1000+ friends or connections and how much valuable communication is actually taking place.

Perhaps you can't communicate all the time, but when you do, make sure you are adding value to that other person's life not just 'pushing' your next event, product, or job application.

In your skin

I was reading an article in the Sunday Times Magazine, the singer Joni Mitchell described as 'all about turning her skin inside out'. I imagine that is attributed to her success.

Now, I have always thought you must be comfortable in your own skin to be able to achieve all you want in this life. I believe that. You musn't try to live in other peoples's hide. Then I suppose when you are settled in yours you can turn it any which way you want.

WOMEN INSPIRED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Local Living, Global Impact is a celebration organised to mark the annual International Women’s Day on 7th March 2009. International Women’s Day is increasing in status yearly, since the success of the first ever celebration in 1911. Thousands of events ranging from dinners to business workshops occur each year to celebrate the women of today and to honour the women of the past.

Organised by Julianmiles Limited, Personal and Professional Coaching, this event will encourage women to recognise the amazing potential that lies within then. The event will feature a video presentation of several local women who are making a global difference through their work and lives.

“As women we are notorious at not seeing our own ability to contribute and influence,” Julianmiles founder, Bukky Olaleye, said. “The women that are interviewed are examples of how through our personal and professional lives, we too can make a difference everyday. These women are not famous, yet they are incredible role models, tirelessly chipping away at injustice, poverty and health issues to provide a better tomorrow.

The essence of the inspirational evening will be in meeting other amazing women as well as enjoying a superb three course meal and great entertainment all at the ultra modern Contemporary Urban Centre, Liverpool.

D'you know what I mean?

Do you ever get the feeling that time is passing and you can't fully account for what you have been doing? Well its been several months since my last post but I have actually been doing a lot. Re branding, working on a new look website (soon to be launched)!!, writing and delivering workshops and developing new products. 2009 is a year of challenges for everyone, yet we must continue to do things that propel life forward and not be stumped by the chaos around us.

What are you doing this year?

Making Lemonade

All we hear in the news is how bad the economy is and worse still,that there is no sign of improvement in the near future. OK so where does that leave us?

With a choice that's what. Ever heard that expression what goes up must come down? Can we apply that here and say the reverse, anything that is down may (possibly) go up? I don't know about that - all I know is it often applies to my bathroom scales. One week I am doing great and shedding the pounds and next thing I know the needle is creeping up again!

Let's choose a different idiom, shall we- every cloud has a silver lining? It may be hard to see at the moment when you walk into the supermarket and baked beans has gone up yet again..

We do have a choice in the matter though, we can make adjustments to our spending, change our eating habits, reduce our non essentials expenditure, and ride the waves as they come.

And when life gives us lemons......

Hitting The Big Time!

I attended an event last week in Manchester (took me forever to find the entrance into City of Manchester museum!) called Hitting the BIG time. It was aimed at the African Carribean business community, and organised by Businesslink Northwest. I met some really cool people and made great contacts.

Key issue at the event was collaboration: working together as individuals, small and medium enterprise owners, or even mega firms coming together to make even greater impact! About time too I say.

It was an enjoyable event,'good job' and thank you to the organisers.

Gert Boyle's family fled Nazi Germany when she was 13--reason enough for her to hope her path as an adult would be smooth. For a time it was: She raised her three children while her husband, Neal, ran Columbia Sportswear in Portland, Oregon. But when Neal died in 1970 at age 47, Gert had to take over. She knew nothing about business, and the records were in shambles. A calm life was not in the cards.

So, the other day, went to a business lunch with friends, Andy and Louise - at a delightful pub that was meant to be halfway between our two homes. Then I found halfway was just a manner of speaking as it was just at their doorstep! Almost...

No really, it was great. A man of the moment, Andy has his camera on the back of his car and afterwards we went and took some pictures on the beach...as you do when you go to have lunch and a meeting at a 'halfway' pub.

But here's to life, friends, beaches, mixing business with pleasure, and spontaneity.
